The used oil field drill pipe is inexpensive and easy to locate in many parts of the United States of America. But it can be difficult to solder often.

The problem is that the pipe develops the characteristics of a permanent magnet during regular use. The powerful magnetic fields during the end cause the arc to spray, fluctuate and hop violently, making it difficult to obtain a good solder. Removable drill pipe is never used in full length outside oil fields. When the lengths are separated into two bits, the same characteristics of permanent magnet exist in both ends of each line.

The challenge is to eliminate the heavy magnetic fields or completely neutralize them. To do this, we simply use the simple electro-magnetic concept of wrapping an isolated wire around an iron center and using a direct current.

In this situation, the iron core is the drilling pipe, and the isolated wire is only a matter of feet from the whip, and when you strike an arc, the direct current comes through the soldering machine. It will go on as long as you weld.

The same method will neutralize both northern and southern polarities, the difference being in the direction the stinger leads around the pipe. The clockwise wrapping will produce one polarity and the other will produce the opposite clockwise. A simple compass test can be used to determine polarity, but this concept is not necessary. If you do not function, the magnetic field intensification can work, which will also intensify your arc disturbance. Only pause and wrap the other way around.

The strength of the current permanent magnetic field is not known in simple field tests. The machine’s amperage setting and the amount of cord wraps that you place around the tube will impact the strength of your induced electromagnetic field. The amplifier is typically determined according to the rod size, and the technicians prefer arc warmth, so that the number of wraps allows the easiest adjustment of electromagnetic field power.

If you are set to 1/8-in, experience reveals. Start with six wraps by rod and change more or less until the desired results are achieved. It is essential that the lead is wrapped tightly, both against and against the pipe, while maintaining wraps from 4 to 5. The rear end is marketed so that the insulation covering the plumbing does not burn. Start your wraps from your stinger far enough that you do not limit the freedom of the stinger to movement. Tests show that the wraps can be extracted, and standard welding is resumable once the root pass is done.
