Stainless Steel 310 is an austenitic variety with medium to low carbon content. What Are the Properties of Stainless Steel 310?

310S Stainless steel consists of 25% Chromium and 20% Nickel. The high chromium and nickel content make the steel very resistant to corrosion and oxidation. This also ensures that Grade 310 can be used in reducing sulfur atmospheres containing H2S.
This stainless steel’s medium to low carbon content means that it is not as prone to brittleness and sensitization.

Industrial pipe suppliers also ship massive loads to the petrochemical industry, because these can be used in moderately carburizing atmospheres. Note how we mentioned moderately carburizing, for more intense carburizing environments, it is suggested to find other heat resistant varieties.

Additionally, Grade 310 is also unsuitable for liquid quenching since the material is prone to thermal shocks. However, is it perfect for cryogenic systems, given how tough the steel is along with its low magnetic permeability.

Like other austenitic stainless steel, Grade 310 cannot be hardened by heat but instead, by cold. Even then, it is not very popular.

How Is Grade 310 Steel Fabricated?

310S Stainless steel is forged in heat between 975 C to 1175 C. The heavy work takes place at 1050 C and a light finish is applied towards the bottom of the range.

Once the forging process is complete, the steel is annealed to relieve the stress. This particular alloy can be cold formed using regular techniques and equipment.
